“Old age: the time in life when you finally know everything, but can’t remember any of it.” Oscar Wilde

My mother (pushing 90 soon) routinely calls me into her room to reset the wireless on her PC. I’ve given up on telling her how to do it. The power button on her mini PC is the same color as the rest of the interface (black). This makes it impossible for anyone to see the button inside her computer cabinet.

We all have that one elderly relative who struggles with technology. Hell! We struggle with tech. Whether it’s resetting the Wi-Fi or finding the power button on their computer, there is usually some issue that could use an engineering upgrade.

As entrepreneurs, our mission is to identify problems like these and create solutions that can improve people’s lives. When we keep an eye (and ear) out for UX issues, there’s usually some simple tweak or upgrade that can make a product that much more user-friendly and attractive.

Case in Point: The Pulse Oximeter

There is concern about health trackers not working well for people with darker skin. Researchers are trying to fix this problem. COVID-19 showed that devices measuring blood oxygen aren’t always accurate for dark-skinned people.

A study found that darker-skinned people got less extra oxygen than they needed after testing. Scientists like Valencia Koomson are creating better devices for all skin tones. Her device measures skin color and sends the right amount of light through the skin.

This new approach helps produce accurate results. Researchers are also urging the FDA to help solve this issue. If you are a senior citizen in your 80s (like my mother) who happens to be richly endowed with melanin, using a device that tracks your health stats needs to be reliable.

Tackling that target audience is potentially a profitable niche. There are a lot of brown people in the world, and we get old!

The Senior Market is Wide Open

I’ll have to apply full disclosure here; I’m now in the senior camp. Having been retired (officially) for a few years, this is my new demographic.

It’s a market with a lot of opportunity for product and service development and improvement. Senior citizens are not going away. New ones are coming on line every day, and their spending power is no joke.

In fact, the American Association of Retired Persons (AARP) found that Americans aged 50 and over have a combined spending power of a whopping $7.6 trillion a year. Making money in this market doesn’t require massive innovation. We can take a look at what is already out there.

Tweaking existing products and services is really a great entry point. With that in mind, let’s dive into some innovative product and process improvement ideas for senior citizens that are ready to shake up the market.

The senior citizen market offers a wealth of opportunities for innovative products and services, and with the spending power of this demographic continuing to rise, it’s the perfect time to explore this niche.

Market Segmentation Within the Senior Market

We can take this brainstorming to the next level by looking for sub-markets within each of these ideas. The concept of perfecting pulse oximeters for people with darker skin is an example of drilling down into a market segment and discovering even more opportunities.

Entrepreneurs can make a positive difference in the lives of senior citizens while tapping into a lucrative market by focusing on their diverse needs and interests.

We can work together to create a world that values and supports seniors throughout their golden years by embracing innovation and constantly seeking ways to address the challenges faced by the aging population.
