Will improving my copywriting skills really improve my business? Yes! Here’s why.

Copywriting is one of the most powerful ways to improve your sales conversion that a small business owner can master. However, it’s also one of the most misunderstood and under-used strategies that many entrepreneurs are using. There are a lot of components to copywriting, but I’m about to cover seven in particular today.

This article is centered on strategies to help you use copywriting to your advantage. Here are my top 7 tips for better copywriting results.

1. Understand the psychology behind your copywriting.

2. Choose to appeal to emotion instead of logic.

3. Adapt to your audience’s expectations.

4. Build a reference file for your specific market.

5. Keep your paragraphs short and sweet.

6. Your opening sentence can make or break your campaign.

7. You won’t know how much you can actually make until you split test.

Understand the Psychology Behind Your Copywriting

When you research your market, look for pain points. These are the core issues that cause people to take action on a topic or situation. If you think about what gets you off the couch, it’s usually something that you react to, based on feelings than logic. There are motivators for most topics and once we get a sense of what those motives are, we can consider what the triggers are.

Include Your Personal Experience in Your Work

What can you use from your personal experiences to bridge the gap between you and your audience? This is significant because if you can bridge that gap between you and your audience, with your content, it provides a bit more trust. Give your audience a glimpse of your troubles, your doubts and your victories. Tell a story that relates to your audience’s situation. Sometimes it takes just a paragraph or a sentence to get the reader on your side.

Adapt for Your Audiences’ Expectations

That means, get inside your audience’s idea of what they are looking for. You’ll get hints of it from your research. This may seem to be difficult when you’re just starting out. This all comes back to storytelling. Sometimes all it takes is an interesting story or example to get the audience engaged.

Build a Reference File for Your Specific Market

If you’re intending to write articles, sales copy or create tutorials, build a reference or swipe file. As you roam the internet, collect samples. Read books on content creation and copy pages for your reference folders. Use tools to help you get your ideas together so that you can spend your time crafting the material into a solid presentation.

Keep Your Paragraphs Short and Sweet

When I was just starting out as a content creator, I wrote books on various topics. My first editor told me that paragraphs with over four sentences slowed the pace of the material. I agree wholeheartedly. Your readers will thank you by reading more of your work.

Your Opening Sentence Can Make or Break Your Campaign

In the age of 60-second videos and 280-character stories, it’s increasingly critical to capture the attention of the average reader in just a few seconds. It’s difficult enough to get them to your page, now you need to entice them to stay. This is because your great copy won’t be noticed if the visitor keeps scrolling by.

You Won’t Know How Much You Can Actually Make Until You Split Test

This is a big deal that many advertisers and promoters miss. When you want to know which parts of an advertising or promotional page are performing the most effectively, you create another that is identical except for one detail. You can change the headline, the color scheme, the image, etc. To determine if there is room for improvement.

Summary

I still remember the first time I was writing sales copy for Yellow Pages ads. I was trying to keep the word count down and include the special offer. In those days, we sold spec ads. I learned a lot about advertising, working in the real world, even though I majored in marketing in college. It was tough going.

So, if you can take the time to learn about the hidden motivations of your target audience and appeal to their desires and wants, you’ll be far ahead of your competitors. Present your audience with content based on what they are expecting. Learn from the experts and keep references for future work.

Don’t scrimp on the editing. Avoid wasting your reader’s time with long drawn out information; work hard to get their attention. Always be testing.

Now that you know how to get going with copywriting, there’s just one thing left for you to do; get going! So get to it, and soon you’ll see your sales rise.
