The Gutenberg press was unveiled to the public back in 1450. “This printing press thing is going to revolutionize the way we consume information!” I could imagine some medieval book publicist shouting over the sound of the machines. Of course, Gutenberg’s invention was part of a growing technological trend.

Movable type as a method of printing on sheets of paper was around 150 years before the German goldsmith perfected his system. The technology was in use in several Asian countries; most notably Korea. The veritable explosion of this technology occurred when more consumers could accept and benefit from the printed word.

It’s a Whole New World of Information

In today’s content-driven society, books have moved from paper to electronic tablets. Although content creation has been around for centuries, it’s developing at an extraordinary pace. Like the printing press, the internet has changed the world of content consumption and its production.

The role of a copywriter has grown from simply summarizing information to creating content that can attract customers and prospects. In an era when algorithms shape how content is created every day, knowing what your audience wants is crucial.

What Is AI Copywriting and How Does It Work?

Artificial intelligence is used to produce human-sounding content at the touch of a button. For example, if you were to enter the phrase “weight loss tips” in the computer program, the application can produce an article that resembles work written by a human.

Deep learning and natural language processing technologies are used to sift through millions of existing writing samples in AI’s database. The data is collected and sorted through by algorithms, and words are sorted by syntax and linguistic relevance.

Natural language generation (NLG) technologies are used by AI tools that generate automated content. A big part of their job is to convert your data into accurate, readable, and well-written content formats. By using NLG tools, you can automate several content creation processes, which will transform the way content is generated.

Many of these artificially generated texts were initially used for customer relation management systems. Chat bots as they were called engaged customers directly on the website through a portal. They are used to answering standard questions posed by prospects and customers. Now they have graduated from customer service to target marketing.

AI Will Change the Way We Write

Artificial intelligence and machine learning can help you create highly targeted, relevant, and personalized content to increase user engagement, conversions, and retention. According to a recent study, 56.5% of US CMOs are using AI for content personalization and targeting decisions.

Artificial intelligence can help you collect and analyze customer data, accelerate the content creation process, and personalize user experiences. There is no doubt that as online software-based services continue to develop, we’ll be able to not only produce market relevant content, we will also be able to combine it with micro-targeting.

The Future of Copywriting with AI and Machine Learning

Imagine the content on your website morphing and changing to fit the of individual reader!

An app called Persado can create relevant and engaging content for landing pages, SMS, push notifications, PPC ads and social networks. Artificial intelligence tools have been used by news companies for years in order to capture information and produce content on the fly.

For example, the Washington Post has been using a bot to create content for political races across the country. This robotic reporter has produced almost 900 articles to date.

Google has their own natural language generating software called Gmail’s Smart Compose that will let you “auto-complete” your sentences when creating emails. Their application works in the background to help you by anticipating your context before making suggestions. Software companies are also using AI to help marketers create finely tuned content for their audience.

Content Automation Working Alongside Their Human Counterparts

The company that created the Wordtune app offers a free plug-in that allows you to enhance your writing by having the app analyze your sentences. You can then choose from sentence variations offered by the app. They also have a free app that allows you to input content from a URL and have it automatically summarize the page. If you’re looking for a writing partner to help you structure your content, this may be an ideal situation.

We’ve accepted apps such as Grammarly and Microsoft’s (aging) spellcheck component. These apps have been around for a while. They allow you to ensure that your grammar and spelling errors never see the light of day.

But the latest apps have surpassed them. Online plug-ins such as ProWritingAid not only check your spelling and grammar, the app will guide you to proper word usage. This is one of several machine learning-based tools for content writers.

You will choose from over 20 specific settings and reports to fine tune your content prior to publication. Word of advice, this app does not like free-flowing usage of gerunds.

Artificial Intelligence and Content Marketing

A word of advice to those who are thinking of using automated content creation tools. If you’re looking to create generic sounding content to fill space on your blog or website, most of these automated AI writers can do that. However, humans still value relevant experiences that they can relate to.

AI writers are very helpful in collecting material for reference or as a framework for your final product. They lack the human touch. Artificial intelligence and machine learning are still in their infancy and work best with human creators.

Welcoming Our AI Content Marketing Overlords

AI content creation will eventually surpass us in terms of productivity and persuasiveness. Once the algorithm can analyze and understand each recent visitor, it can shape the content specifically for that viewer. This will extend to other media, such as videos and audio.

Human-like speech is also moving at a rapid pace through artificial intelligence. Companies like WellSaid Labs text and produce near-perfect voiceovers. Their synthetic voiceover business continues to grow as text to speech software makes a play to take over business presentations and voice narration.

Consumers have not blinked at the trends toward content automation. We’ve gotten used to artificial humans in video games as well as automated responses to customer service calls. We seem to equate automated customization with increased convenience for users.

Our Personal Data Determines the Content We Consume

Humans have been sharing their personal data with large corporations for decades. The time is coming when algorithms can parse this information in ways that we can’t even imagine today. The ability to personalize information through micro-targeting is getting more sophisticated with each technological breakthrough.

I’m old enough to remember typing class (on Smith Corona machines) in high school. I was not a big fan then, but ironically, that simple skill made me a lot of money over the years. Although I still do a lot of typing on a computer keyboard, I prefer creating my content by dictating to my PC.

Back in high school, I couldn’t imagine a day when a computer would do my work without me even lifting a finger. Now, I’m waiting for the chip that will be installed in my brain. “This microchip thing is going to revolutionize the way we consume information!”
