I have another take on the concept of followers. In my interpretation of Jesus' ministry, he's guiding people by example. He's not looking for passive followers, he's looking for active members who follow his examples.

The rabbi constantly offers examples through parables of what he expects from his followers. He doesn't want them to worship him. He's looking for them to imitate his actions.

Unfortunately, the Gospel of John is far more palatable for modern Christians because it emphasizes worship over works. The book of James asks more of them than just faith and praise.

In his writings, James encourages his readers to live a consistent Christian life in accordance with Jesus' actions. Faith Without Works Is Dead. "What does it profit, my brethren, if someone says he has faith but does not have works? Can faith save him?"

Jesus wasn't just about theory. He led by example. The rabbi put in the work and expected his followers to do the same.
