Risky Business: Why I Despise Shark Tank
I hate Shark Tank. There, I said it. Even though it's not as bad as The Apprentice, a few episodes into season two made me realize how much I hate reality shows in general.
Shark Tank is an American reality TV show. On the show, there is a group of investors called “Sharks.” Entrepreneurs pitch their business idea or product to them. These five people decide whether or not to work with the presenter.
The sharks point out what is wrong with the entrepreneur's pitch, and then they vote. If the investors on Shark Tank are interested, they’ll put money into the business.
Of course, they will take a stake in the company in exchange for their cash. They also offer advice and connections to the “lucky” winners. As “reality” shows go, it’s not that bad! So, why did I stop watching? “Gamification and the relentless need for drama
It had so much potential for educating viewers on entrepreneurship. I don’t mean business in general, that’s far too broad a topic. Entrepreneurship is special because it’s that aspect of business where there really is drama—the thrill of victory and the agony of defeat.
Plenty of Real-life Drama
Entrepreneurship is like sports, soap operas, politics, war, and even porn rolled into a personal drama. Yes, it is also boring as hell…
