The conservative fantasy machine is currently in overdrive. Country was solidly working class entertainment along with the blues and "hillbilly" music in the 50s, 60s and into the 70s.

"Country music rose from deep and intertwined roots – from fiddle tunes and hymns and from work songs and ballads; from smoky saloons and secluded Appalachian hollows; from barrios along the southern border and the wide-open spaces of the American West."

Ken Burns' documentary on the Roots of Country Music is a must watch for fans of pretty much any American music genre.

Conservatives co-opted the genre after 911 into what it is today. It's telling that a guy like Lil Nas X put so many people into emotional spasms when his song became a monster country hit.
