The problem is that we're going to have a Nixon pardon issue all over again. Ford gave Nixon a pass and every power hungry sociopath took it as a signal that they'll be untouchable with enough political capital.
One way to shut Trump down is with ostracization. House arrest for the entire term of his sentences. He gets to wear an ankle monitor and doesn't get to leave his estate.
He still gets to pontificate and lie on social media but he's also barred from soliciting for profit just like any other criminal. His options will be using cutouts for generating revenue. But he's still subject to further legal action as he'll continue to break the laws that govern us all.
Until sociopaths understand that they don't have extra-judicial protection when connected to power and money, the line of wanna-be Trumps will just keep growing.
One day they'll get the seat of power and won't fear losing it. The fact is that we as a nation need to figure out how to bring our government workers back to the position of public servants instead of fearless leaders.
Holding them accountable no matter their station in life is important in that regard. Criminals with no deterrent to their actions just means more crimes without consequences.
